The formula (and why the label wattage is all you need)
Electric resistance heaters have no moving efficiency: a 1,500 W element delivers 1,500 W of heat, which is 5,118 Btu per hour (1 kWh = 3,412 Btu, per EIA's conversion factors). Ceramic, oil-filled, infrared and fan-forced models all obey the same rule; they differ in how they distribute heat, not in how much heat they make per watt. So the cost is simply:

Why space heaters still make sense: they heat 150 square feet instead of 2,000. Five ways to cut the number without freezing
- Use the thermostat, not the switch. A heater with a working thermostat cycles off at set point. In a well-sealed room it may run 40 to 60% of the time, which is the difference between 360 and 180 kWh a month at 8 hours of use.

- Heat the person before the room. A heated blanket or mattress pad draws 50 to 200 W, one-tenth of a space heater, and covers the eight hours you are asleep.

Circuit math you should not skip
