Welcome to JouleIO ("JouleIO", "we", "our", "us"). These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of jouleio.com and the calculators, articles, and energy-related resources offered on the Site. By accessing or using the Site, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Site.

1. Acceptance of Terms

These Terms form a binding agreement between you and JouleIO. We may update them from time to time. Updates will be posted on this page with a revised "Last updated" date. Your continued use of the Site following any changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms. If the changes are material, we will highlight them on this page for at least 30 days.

2. Description of Service

JouleIO provides free, web-based calculators and educational resources covering residential and small-commercial energy topics: solar system sizing and savings, electric vehicle charging costs and ROI, appliance energy consumption, HVAC efficiency, utility bill analysis, carbon footprint, and related energy economics. Tools draw on data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), EnergyStar, state utility rate disclosures, and manufacturer specifications. The Site is an informational resource and is not a solar installer, electrical contractor, utility company, or licensed energy consultant.

3. Not Engineering or Financial Advice

JouleIO is not a licensed electrical contractor, solar installer, HVAC engineer, energy auditor, utility, or financial advisor. Nothing on this Site constitutes engineering, safety, electrical, financial, tax, or legal advice.

All content — including calculator results, articles, guides, and statistics — is provided for general informational and educational purposes only. Energy decisions — installing solar, buying an EV, upgrading HVAC, switching utility plans, claiming tax credits, pursuing rebate programs, and similar — are highly dependent on your specific property, local utility policies, state incentives that change over time, and equipment specifications. Before making any decision with financial, safety, or engineering consequences, consult a licensed professional.

4. Calculator Accuracy and Limitations

JouleIO uses current EIA rate data, NREL solar resource models, EnergyStar efficiency ratings, and manufacturer-published specifications. However, calculator results are estimates, not guarantees of actual production, savings, or costs. Real-world results may differ for reasons including but not limited to:

  • Local utility rates that change seasonally and by tier (time-of-use, demand charges)
  • Weather variability, shading, roof pitch, and site-specific solar conditions
  • Equipment degradation over time and installation quality
  • Changes to federal tax credits (ITC/EV) and state rebates
  • Interconnection fees, net metering policy changes, and utility program revisions
  • Individual driving patterns, home occupancy, and usage habits

You are responsible for verifying any numbers against formal site surveys, utility quotes, installer proposals, and professional designs before relying on them. JouleIO makes no warranty that calculator results are complete, accurate, or current.

5. Permitted Use

You may use JouleIO only for lawful purposes and in accordance with these Terms. You agree not to:

  • Use the Site in any way that violates any applicable law or regulation.
  • Attempt to interfere with, disrupt, or compromise the Site, its servers, or its infrastructure.
  • Scrape, mirror, or systematically copy content from the Site without written permission.
  • Use automated scripts to generate load or circumvent rate limiting.
  • Reverse-engineer calculator logic or re-publish it as your own service.
  • Use the Site to transmit malware, spam, or any harmful content.
  • Misrepresent calculator results as formal engineering studies or utility bill guarantees.

6. Intellectual Property

All content on JouleIO — including text, calculators, logos, page layouts, article series, methodology explanations, data compilations, and design elements — is the property of JouleIO or its content contributors and is protected by U.S. and international copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws.

You may view, print, and share individual pages for personal, non-commercial use, and you may link to the Site from your own website or social media. You may not reproduce, redistribute, republish, sublicense, or create derivative works from JouleIO content without our prior written consent.

7. Third-Party Content and Advertising

The Site contains advertising served by third parties (including Google AdSense and other ad networks), as well as references and links to third-party websites such as EIA.gov, NREL, EnergyStar.gov, DSIRE, state utility commissions, and related publications. JouleIO does not control and is not responsible for the content, accuracy, or practices of third-party sites or advertisers. Inclusion of an advertisement or link is not an endorsement.

8. Disclaimers

THE SITE AND ALL CONTENT ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, OR ACCURACY. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SITE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR FREE FROM VIRUSES OR OTHER HARMFUL COMPONENTS.

9. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, JOULEIO AND ITS OPERATORS SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, SPECIAL, PUNITIVE, OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH YOUR USE OF THE SITE OR RELIANCE ON ITS CONTENT, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO OVERPAID ENERGY BILLS, INSTALLATION MISTAKES, MISSED REBATES, OR UNDERESTIMATED PAYBACK PERIODS. OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY SHALL NOT EXCEED ONE HUNDRED U.S. DOLLARS (USD $100).

10. Indemnification

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless JouleIO, its operators, employees, and agents from and against any claims, damages, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of your use of the Site, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any right of another party.

11. Privacy

Your use of the Site is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which is incorporated into these Terms by reference.

12. Termination

We may restrict, suspend, or terminate your access to the Site at any time, with or without notice, for any reason, including violation of these Terms. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination — including disclaimers, indemnities, and limitations of liability — will survive.

13. Governing Law and Disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the state in which JouleIO is operated, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or your use of the Site shall be resolved in the state or federal courts located in that jurisdiction, and you consent to the exclusive jurisdiction and venue of those courts.

14. Severability and Entire Agreement

If any provision of these Terms is held to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in full force. These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy and any other policies posted on the Site, constitute the entire agreement between you and JouleIO regarding the Site and supersede all prior agreements.
