Cost to Charge an EV at Home by State in 2026: per 100 Miles and per Year at EIA Rates
With the federal purchase credits gone (Section 30D and 25E ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025), the running-cost advantage is the EV case. That advantage is not one number: it depends on your state's residential electricity rate and on how many kWh your vehicle needs per 100 miles. This page computes both for all 50 states and DC using the June 2026 EIA residential rate table and EPA ratings from fueleconomy.gov.

How the tables are computed
Three inputs, all public. The electricity rate is EIA's average residential price by state for June 2026 (Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A), the same data that feeds the EV savings calculator. Vehicle efficiency is the EPA combined rating in kWh per 100 miles from fueleconomy.gov; the three tiers below bracket almost every EV on sale:

The third input is charging efficiency. The EPA figure is energy delivered to the battery; the meter counts energy drawn from the wall. Level 2 AC charging typically loses around 10% in the onboard charger and cabling, so the "wall" annual cost column below multiplies by 1.10. Treat that as a planning assumption, not a measurement of your car.

The "at the wall" column includes the 10% Level 2 charging-loss allowance. The last column is the gasoline price at which a 30 MPG car would cost the same per mile as the 30 kWh/100 mi EV; if pump prices in your state are above it, the EV is cheaper to fuel.

Note what the break-even column says about Hawaii and California: at the average retail rate an EV there is only cheaper than a 30 MPG gas car when gasoline is above $4.74 and $3.13 per gallon respectively. Those are exactly the states where the utility's EV time-of-use plan, not the average rate, decides the economics.
Why the average rate overstates your cost in high-rate states
EIA's figure is total residential revenue divided by total residential kWh, an average across every plan and hour. EV owners mostly charge overnight, and many utilities in the expensive states sell overnight electricity on time-of-use or EV-specific tariffs at a fraction of the peak price. The right way to use the tables above is as a ceiling: if your utility offers an off-peak rate, plug that rate into the EV charging cost calculator instead. The reverse caution applies in the cheap states. Nevada's 13.11¢ is an average of flat tariffs; there is little room for an EV plan to improve on it, so the table value is close to what you will pay. Fixed monthly charges are outside both cases; they do not change with charging.
Public charging changes the math
Every number on this page is for home charging on a residential meter. DC fast charging is priced per kWh or per minute by the network, includes demand and session costs the residential rate does not, and in most markets lands well above even the most expensive state's residential average. A driver who fast-charges for half of their miles will not see the state ranking above; they will see the network's ranking. Fuel is one line. Whether an EV is worth it in 2026 also turns on purchase price without the federal credit (see what remains of EV incentives), insurance, tires and eventual battery replacement.
